The UK’s Top Five Festive Locations
Here are our favorite places to visit across the UK this Christmas…
1) London
As is to be expected of the one the world’s great capital cities, London is a simply breathtaking place to spend the Christmas period. The city literally sparkles with the thousands upon thousands of lights which are placed seemingly everywhere. For last minute shoppers, and post Christmas bargain hunters, it is particularly great, so long as you do not mind mingling in the huge crowds that pack the streets.
In terms of entertainment, there are few, if any, better places in the world to be. Theatre, musicals and ballet can be taken in at a variety of places every single night of the week, and large festive gatherings, in the form of fairs or carol singing, are a just as regular occurrence.
2) Edinburgh
Edinburgh takes a really tradition approach to Christmas, and you can find plenty of festivities based around the huge Christmas tree and nativity scene at its center. Carol concerts take place on a near daily basis, with Christmas related puppet shows and musical productions being common too.
Craft fairs and parades start to appear in the week preceding the big day, around which time the celebrations and festivities really go up a notch. By the time the 31st December comes around, the whole place reaches its peak, and Edinburgh is widely regarded as being the best UK location to see in the New Year.
3) The Shetland Isles
If you enjoy the outdoors in wintertime, you will love visiting The Shetland Isles around Christmastime, where you can watch many sea mammals from the Island beaches. Watching the singing seals, the entertaining otters, the graceful dolphins and majestic orcas is an experience that you won’t forget. You might even catch a Shetland pony show.
The Shetland Isles is a perfect place for walking or cycling and taking in the astounding scenery or fishing, playing golf, diving, or kayaking. For the indoor type, there are tons of events featuring music and culture including historical museums and exhibitions. Around New Years, many people have reported seeing the mysterious Northern Lights from the area.
4) York
Well known for the magical Christmas experience that it offers, York is a place that really makes the extra effort as far as Christmas lights and street entertainment go. Christmas melodies fill the streets, the aromas of chestnuts and hot chocolate abound, and Santa can be counted upon to make regular visits.
Activities include ice skating at the Ice Factor, the Festival of Angels, wonderful pantomimes, amazing music presentations, and ghost tours for the real thrill seekers. For those looking for a bit more culture, museums and castles are plentiful too.
5) Keswick
Keswick is a town near the famous English Lake District, a land of gorgeous lakes and spectacular mountains. The town’s nearby lake, Derwentwater, is thought to be the very lake that where King Arthur acquired Excalibur, his famous sword, from the Lady of the Lake. Another prominent place to visit is the Castlerigg Stone Circle which is believed to have been used for druidic religious purposes over 3000 years ago.
Keswick offers more than just a taste of history and country life though, there are the traditional Christmas festivities taking place there too. A visit there offers a chance to sample a real English Christmas, away from the commercialism of the bigger cities.
