Chesapeake Hotels Offering Cheap Accommodations
Chesapeake Bay is world renowned not only for its size and the seafood it offers, it is also recognized as a great vacation destination. Although fishing is now being restricted in this area, there are many other exciting things to see and do in this wonderful city.
Chesapeake Bay is regarded as one of the largest estuaries in the world. Its waters extend from Virginia and Maryland towards the Atlantic Ocean. To Algonquins, it is know as ?The Great Shellfish Bay?. It runs a full 200 mi. long and it is as wide as 30 mi.
Ten thousand years ago, the region was noted as a valley that lay on the Susquehanna River going to the Atlantic. However, it got flooded on the latter part of the last ice age, leading to the rise of the oceans.
This bay is one amongst the world’s most naturally productive bodies of water in terms of aquatic life ? mostly because of its shallow depth and saltwater-freshwater mix. In average, the depth of this bay is about 30 feet. All these and its wonderful appeal make it suitable for fishing for mussels, oysters and blue crabs among others.
At current this bay has been experiencing a long term state of decline due to over fishing and pollution. It is also plagued by residential and agricultural run-offs of fertilizers going to its tributaries. This has produced enormous algae growth, choking off the bay’s natural plant life which is also where the fish rely for food.
To protect Chesapeake Bay, environmental reforms were being enacted. These are already strictly implemented in Maryland (Save the Bay Movement). What made the coordination for this move to save the bay very difficult are the laws that differs state after state. This is since the bay’s tributaries go through 6 different states.
Thus, fishing is currently strictly regulated. Even the fishermen who are now threatened by the diminishing fish stocks strongly support these regulations.
Chesapeake Bay Eateries and Food Joints
Chesapeake Bay offers several small eateries to choose from. These eateries often serve their signature dish ? the Maryland Blue Crabs. There are even those that will let you catch your dinner yourself.
